Josh Turns 3

It's hard to believe that Joshua (my nephew) turned three today. We got down with some of the coolest 2, 3, and 4 year olds I've ever known. Seriously folks... these are the future Donald Trumps and Madonnas of the world. The party started out by singing from Miss Lindsey, followed by a lunch and cupcakes at Pequods. Trip to Michigan this weekend

Carolyn and I got back from Michigan a couple hours ago. It was a pretty quick weekend considering we left Saturday morning, and spent about seven hours in the car since we were in the middle of a snowstorm. The reason why we went up to Michigan was that we had four tickets to see the Red Wings. It was the first time that I had ever been to a Red Wings game, so that was pretty exciting. The best part of the game was we received a behind-the-scenes tour of the arena. We literally were shown around the entire arena, it was about a 45 minute tour. We started off by watching some practice before the game, and then we slowly worked our way around the back hallways. Here are a couple of pictures from the evening.

This was my favorite picture from the entire weekend. During the tour are we were taken to the room where all of the beer was stored for the entire stadium. There were probably about 30-40 kegs of beer in the refrigerator. There are three guys in this picture whose job it was to stand in front to make sure no one got behind the door. You can see some of the Kegs behind the guy on the left side of the picture. They were starting this thing like it was Fort Knox.

Alright, this post is going to be a little strange/funny...

So this weekend Carolyn and I are organizing everything in the Kitchen, and we decide to throw away some of our canned food that is expired. I'm thinking that there are probably a couple things in there that were 2 or 3 years old.

So I find about 8-9 cans that are expired... then I find a can that looks really old... and I see a picture of Reggie White on the cover (it's a Campbell's soup can). So I'm thinking this has got to be at least 5 years old. I look for the expire date and here's what I find...

This can has been with me for a long time! Maybe I'll hold onto and it will be a collectors item?

2008 Highlights

It's Sunday evening and Carolyn and I had a pretty low-key day. We went out this morning to run a bunch of errands and then came back in the afternoon to do some cooking. We had a bunch of parties from this past Friday and Saturday. It was great to see everyone. Time sure does fly why when you're having a good time.

As I'm writing this blog entry, the sad thing is I'm watching snow pouring down outside of my house. We're supposed to get about 3-6 inches of snow today. This is a pretty drastic change from enjoying weather which was in the 70s the entire week in Naples. It's good to be back in Chicago, but I miss the nice weather and lifestyle down in Naples.

Thanks to my mom and Dad for hosting us for the entire week. Another special shout out to David and Catherine and Joshua who made the trip extra fun. I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. Have a great week!

Chicago Avenue Salon

This morning I did a shoot for the girls at Chicago Avenue salon, which is where I get my hair cut. They were looking for a picture for their holiday greeting card. We started out at Lorraine's Diner which is just down the street from the salon. Lorraine was nice enough to let us use her diner for the shoot. Thanks Lorraine! After getting some shots in the Diner, we then had some fun with some outside shots of the girls walking down Chicago Avenue. Check out their amazing holiday sweaters and extra flair they have on. And don't forget about Max, who is the black lab leading the way. Enjoy the pics.

Hello everyone. Sorry it's been so long since my last blog post. Things have been going well but they have also been pretty busy. Last night Carolyn and I went to go see the movie W. Overall it was a pretty average movie, and some of the stereotypes/acting was a bit exaggerated, but nonetheless it was still pretty entertaining. The one thing that was on my mind about this movie was the following question... how can the president with the lowest approval rating in the history of the United States also have the highest approval rating in the history of the United States? It's pretty straightforward the reason why his approval rating was so high was directly related to 9/11. That's pretty clear when you look at the approval ratings by week. But it's still just makes me think... how can people be so behind someone (Bush's approval rating back in 2001 was around 90%) and then a couple years later have the completely opposite reaction. I often think about what his approval rating would be if the war in Iraq had gone smoother, if there were nuclear weapons discovered, or if the economy was in a great position. My guess is it would be somewhere in the 45-55% rating. We'll never know, but it sure interesting to think about how different scenarios would play out.

A quick shout out to my friend Kenny Kim who may have a chance to photograph the inauguration in Washington DC. If he gets to do it that would be a really cool event. Kenny... I'm really good at getting Starbucks and holding lenses so let me know if you need my help!

Tonight I'm going to the Bulls came with my brother David. I'm trying to be excited about the game but the Bulls have not been able to put together a great team in a really long time. I remember back when I was in high school and the Bulls were in the middle of their world championships. It was such a fun time to watch them. I remember when a Bulls ticket was the hottest ticket in town and average seats would go for $100-$200. Hopefully in the next couple years they will be able to turn things around.

I will do a quick puppy update for everyone. Last week Carolyn and I went to another breeder. We really liked what we saw and if everything works out (we're still waiting to see if the mom is pregnant) we're moving forward with this breeder.

Carolyn gets punked

For the past two months, I've been working on a surprise party for Carolyn. And yesterday was the big day. It all started yesterday morning around 9:45, when Carolyn was about to head out for tutoring at WITS. I stopped her from leaving, and told her that she didn't have to go because I had planned a surprise for her. We left our house together for our surprise destination up north.

We arrived at Barrington Kennels just before 11 o'clock. As soon as we pulled up she knew exactly what was going on since we've been talking about getting a dog for a while. There were a bunch of Bernie's Mountain dogs running around and we played with all of them. We met with the owner for about an hour and a half. It felt like we were adopting a child which was a little strange. Originally the plan was to pick out a puppy while we were there and then bring it home eight weeks later, but all the puppies were spoken for, so we he have to wait a little longer.

We jumped in the car and headed back home. Little did Carolyn know that the dog was only the first surprise of the day. The second surprise was the surprise party I organized for her back at our house. We pulled up to the house around 1:30 and Carolyn said "give me the keys, I've got to go inside and go to the bathroom". So she runs up the front steps of the house, opens the door and everyone yelled "surprise". She truly was surprised and just stood there. And then tells everyone she had to go to the bathroom. There were about 30 people at the party.

Carolyn thought I might throw her a surprise birthday party, but she wasn't expecting it at this time of the day. She actually thought something was going to happen later that evening since we had dinner plans with a friend at our house. The party wouldn't have happened unless it was for Katie/Patrick and Catherine/David who did a great job of setting up. Thank you guys for doing such a nice job. Carolyn's actual birthday is on October 27th, so she has about a week to still feel 29.

The strange thing about the surprise birthday party was that I don't have any pictures. For anyone who was at the party and took pictures, please send them my way. Thanks

Testing out a new type of photograph

I've been playing around with a new type of photography approach called HDR. It stands for high dynamic range. You basically take 3 pictures and combine them into one. And 3 pictures you take are at different settings, so you get 3 different exposures. Once you combine them all into one picture, you're able to create images that you wouldn't be able to create with one image. Here are two sample images I created. What do you guys think? Cool or not?

Going to the Blackhawks game

I hope everyone is well. Carolyn and I went to the Blackhawks game last night. I haven't been to a game since I was in high school. We had some great seats courtesy of Vienna Beef. It was actually a pretty good game too. The Blackhawks were down 3-0, and they came back to win 4-3. What was really funny, was that we went with one of Carolyn's coworkers, and it turns out we both went to the same high school, although she graduated much later than I did. But I do remember her older brother (Matt Goldsberry). What a small world. Here are a couple of pictures from the game last night.

And last but not least, apparently they now have the "ice girls" who zoom around the rink to pick up loose pieces of ice.

I'm getting really excited about the trip we just booked to Rome a couple of weeks ago. I've never actually been on a cruise before, so I thought this would be a unique experience. What I also like about it is that we get to go to a bunch of different places. Here's a list of the difference cities that were going to visit...

I've been to most of the places before, but when I was very young, so I'm sure the experience will be completely different. Once we get back to Rome at the end of the cruise, we're going to take a train to Venice and stay there for a couple of days. What's nice is that the plane ride over is only about eight hours. The last time Carolyn and I traveled overseas, we ended up flying for about 18 hours to South Africa. So 8 hours seems like a walk in the park. If anyone has any fun ideas of things to do in cities that we're visiting, feel free to send me an e-mail or leave a comment. I hope everyone is doing well. Isn't it nice that the sun is out again in Chicago? It almost feels like summer again.

Amanda and Aaron's wedding

This past weekend we headed up to Michigan for Amanda and Aaron's wedding. It was great because we got to see Bruce and Rachel on Friday and Sunday. Bruce is doing well and got a great review from the doctor. On Friday night, we had dinner with Mike and Kim. Later that night we went to the MGM Casino. We played some craps and blackjack, but unfortunately didn't win anything. I was impressed by the MGM, I actually felt like I was in Las Vegas.

On Saturday we had the wedding which was at the Henry Ford Estate. This was the actual place where Henry Ford lived when he was older. It was pretty impressive and the grounds were amazing. Here are a bunch of pictures from the day.

This was the flower girl Emily, who was hilarious the entire night. I think I may try to hook her up with my nephew Joshua. He is only a couple months younger than her. Ha ha.

Mission Accomplished

We did it! Around 12:30 today I got back from what seemed like the longest bike ride in the history of my life. We started at around 7:45 this morning. As planned, we rode along the lakefront, and then jumped on Sheridan Road. We went through Evanston, and then had breakfast at a place called Clarke's. We ate outside and it was great to unwind for about 45 minutes. We then went into Borders because Carolyn wanted to buy a book, and then we heard some chatty Cathy talking about this bike trail that she really likes. The trail goes along the north branch of the Chicago River, and part of the trail included a sculpture garden for a couple of miles. So we went home that way, and it was a nice change of scenery. We stopped a couple times along the way because it was getting really hot, or maybe because we were just really out of shape?... I think all in all, we rode about 35-45 miles. It was a fun day, and we had a great time.

The Big Bike Ride

Tomorrow morning marks a big day in how not to be lazy on your day off. Carolyn and I decided that we're going for a bike ride up to Evanston tomorrow morning. We hopefully will leave really early in the morning, sometime around 7:30 or 8:00. We've only gone bike riding a couple times this year. And we actually went this morning for a quick ride to milk and honey to grab some breakfast. I guess you could call that our warm-up bike ride and tomorrow will be the real test.

Some of you remember that I used to do adventure racing in Chicago. And I'm actually using the same bike that I used to race in. It's really nice and light weight... it's a blend between a mountain bike and a racing bike. So, I have no excuses to not finish the ride! Once we get to Evanston, we'll probably have a late breakfast or early launch (depending how fast or slow would go). I really like going up to Evanston, because it feels like it's such an escape from downtown, even though it's only a couple of miles away. it's also fun to go through Northwestern's campus even know it makes me feel pretty old.

I actually looked at Google maps earlier today, to see which way we're going to take. And you can actually create a custom map which I've posted below. If anyone is feeling extra athletic tomorrow, feel free to call my phone and we can connect on the way up.

I hope everyone is having fun weekend. The weather has been phenomenal outside. I love it when it's in the upper 80s. I'm thinking that this may be the last hot weekend in Chicago.

Yesterday was a fun day. We celebrated my father's 65th birthday party. Ironically, that's the same year he graduated college. And yes, he also went to Purdue University. And in a very bizarre turn of events, he actually taped the number 65 to the front of his chest, and then he revealed it in front of everyone. I admire his sense of youth and exuberance. Joshua helped introduce him by adding a big "ta dahhh" when he came in the room. Joshua was up to his normal funny self. He's now at the point where he knows how to ask for a horsie ride, so everyone was giving rides all night long. When people started getting tired, he then realized he actually had to feed the horse hay so they could keep going. So everyone was fed imaginary hay. After about 15 minutes of rides, everyone was pretty tired. When Joshua realized people were getting tired, he looks around and says "this isn't nap time, let's go". We bought my dad a certificate to the White Sox game, which I'm sure he will use in the next month. Here's a picture of Joshua and Carolyn hanging out at the birthday party wearing my sunglasses.

After the birthday party we went to our second party of the night to celebrate Katie's 30th birthday. The birthday party felt like a mini reunion from her wedding last month. And of course, I had another piece of birthday cake, which made it two pieces of birthday cake within two hours. Melissa and Casey

Here are some pictures from this past weekend. We started out taking pictures on Michigan Avenue. Melissa and Casey had an awesome car which actually was a stretched version of a Rolls-Royce so there was plenty of room for all of us in the back seat. What's funny about this shot is that the Trump Tower is now getting in the way of the Wrigley building.

Sorry it's been so long since my last blog post. The last couple of weeks have been pretty busy. Carolyn's dad actually had a heart attack last week, so we went to Michigan for a couple of days. Bruce is doing fine now and is back at home resting. Everything happened so fast, and things were pretty scary for about a day. Everyone is doing well now and everything should be back to normal just in time for a nice long weekend. We're going to go back and visit him next weekend as well.

Last weekend I photographed a wedding at Adler planetarium for Melissa and Casey. Strangely enough, Kenny Kim and Mike Colon photographed at the same venue the night before. I guess you could say that I follow in their footsteps... Ha ha ha ha ha. I'm actually anxious to see some of the pictures they took so I can compare them to mine. I'll post some of the pictures from Melissa and Casey's wedding shortly.

This weekend we have a couple different things going on. The first is a birthday party for Katie B. and then we're also celebrating my father's birthday with a barbecue at my brother's house. And guess what we're cooking up for the BBQ... Vienna Beef (courtesy of Carolyn). It will be fun to see Joshua because I don't think I've seen him for about a week or two. I'm sure I will have plenty of funny stories to tell since he seems to be full of personality these days. We also have a couple of random things to do around the house. Additionally, I'm in the process of upgrading my computer. I'm installing a new internal hard drive that is one terabyte, so I will have plenty of extra space for more pictures.

I wanted to take some time to acknowledge Amy Cano, who has helped me over the past couple months on many shoots. For those of you who don't know, Amy came to Chicago for the summer from California to help me out, as well as volunteer for a church she's been working with in Chicago. She's been a great assistant/intern/shotgun car companion/student.

So know you're probably trying to figure out this picture. This was a wedding for Alexis and Josh we did about a month ago, and the reception was at a banquet hall/conservatory. We had some time before the guests arrived, so we went to the museum part of the conservatory to look around. I turned to see where Amy was, and I saw her taking this picture. I started cracking up because here she is, doing a great job at capturing the details of the venue, but the stuffed owl just was just too hilarious. I love how the wings are positioned perfectly to simulate how it's flying around, maybe about to capture a mouse or something like that.

Amy - I know you're probably going to want to kill me for posting this picture, but I had to do it. Thanks again for all your hard work. You're going to be a great photographer and I'm very fortunate we were able to work with each other this summer. Thanks again!

Brooke and Doug

I had the best time this evening photographing Brooke and Doug. We started out on Michigan Avenue, and then headed down to Navy Pier and pretended we were from out of town. It was really nice outside, even though it was a little hot at times. Here are a couple of shots.

New Wedding Album

So earlier this year I was at at the WPPI show in Las Vegas, and I met with an amazing wedding album company. All of their albums are hand made in Japan, and the quality is unreal! I liked the album so much I ordered two of them for my own wedding album. Here are some pictures of some of the pages. One has black pages, and the other one is in white.

many of the pages have fold outs, so it really gives a wide perspective

A lot of the pages have custom cut marks based on the pictures on the page. On this page, all you saw was Carolyn, and then when you unfolded the spread, it revealed a completely different scene.

And last, but certainly not least... here's a couple shots from an engagement session I did in San Francisco on Monday before jumping on a flight back to Chicago. It was a fast paced shoot since Carolyn and I had to run to the airport to make our flight. We got a ride back from Kristen and Shawn which was perfect. Plenty of time to spare and hit an airport bookstore before the flight.

We got back last night from San Francisco. We were only there for about a day, but it was packed with a lot of fun. We walked the golden gate bridge for the first time. And we managed to cram some shopping in during our 5 mile hike around the city. Here are some pictures from Sunday afternoon.
