Happy Birthday to Me

It’s my birthday today!!! I’m certainly feeling a little older today… so much that I think it’s time to start getting on a more rigorous workout plan… a.k.a. start working out altogether. Thanks for everyone who has sent me Happy Birthday wishes over the past coupe days (special shout out to my Dentist and the folks at Leopard Hills... I always like when you get a happy birthday message from the people you least expect).

Here are some other people that share my birthday…
James Carville, Jr (Democratic political consultant)
Bobby Knight (basketball coach)
Hillary Rodham Clinton
Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers)
Pablo Picasso

Carolyn is taking me out to Second City tonight which should be fun.

And this little piggy went Wii Wii Wii all the way home...

So here's a really, really funny story...

For the past 5 months Carolyn and I have wanted a Nintendo Wii. We probably have gone into Best Buy and Circuit City about 25 times checking to see if they had any new shipments. And every time, the answer was "no, check back in a week or two and we may have some coming in".

So for her birthday, which is on October 27, I figured it would be a really cool gift If I could manage to find one. Well... this
Saturday I was able to find one at Circuit City. I just got lucky with timing since they had just received a shipment the day before. What's funny is they really didn't want to tell me they had them. I actually played dumb in speaking to one of the sales guys and I said, I heard you just got a shipment in... he looked back at me like "how do yo know we just got a shipment in?". He directed me to the store manager, who had the same look on his face, but was very nice and said he could get me one which was in the wharehouse. So I got my Wii and I was really excited to surprise Carolyn for her birthday.

So.. I'm having a conversation with Carolyn in the car on Sunday and she tells me how excited I'm going to be for my birthday this year. We're still finalizing dinner plans, so she tells me that when I get my present I may want to spend some time with it later that night... so we opt for a dinner on another night. We're going to Japonais, but that's not important... back to the story. So I'm thinking about what she means by the comment that "I'll want to spent time with the gift" and I'm thinking there's no way she was able to find a Wii. So now we're starting to suspect each other is up to something for the rest of the day... and then on Sunday night, when I was at the Bruce Springsteen concert, she found an email when she opened up my computer that said Nintendo Wii in the subject line (this was someone on craigslist that I was emailing back and forth on) [For the record, I'm not 100% she wasn't snooping around, but I will give her the benefit of the doubt.]

Earlier today at work we talk to each other and both admit that we both think something funny has happened, but we will not say what has happened, since we're both mad that we thought we had the perfect gift for each another. She calls me at the end of the day and says she wants to grab a bite at Bijan's. I get there around 6pm and she give's me a card and says happy birthday. She then takes out a package from under the table an it's a Nintendo Wii. We both start laughing and start to tell the whole story of how we ended up finding one. Carolyn ended up getting hers on ebay about a week ago and had it shipped to my parents condo.

We unpacked one of the Wiis tonight and played for about 45 minutes. It was really fun and well worth the wait.

Bruce Springsteen Concert

Just got back from the Bruce Springsteen concert over at the United Center. It was my first Bruce Springsteen concert and I was impressed by how much energy Bruce has at 60 years of age. He also had a really nice theme about being American and I couldn't help but a feel a sense of pride about this country. We take for granted so much about the freedom we have to do whatever we want and to achieve. I was reminded of this tonight and for that I thank Bruce. And my brother David, who asked me to go as an early birthday gift. Here are some pictures from tonight's concert.

Halloween is coming

It's almost here, so Carolyn and I started to decorate for the big holiday. We're excited because this is the first year we have our own house and we'll actually get trick or treaters this year. We've both lived in condos for so long, we've gotten used to not having people over for Halloween. Here are some pictures of the decorations.

Girls have Cooties... YUCK!

Carolyn had some house guests this weekend. Ginger flew in from New york and Nikki drove over all the way from Lincoln Park. I was not officially part of "girls weekend" (with the exception of watching the movie Preminition) so I had the house to myself for most of the weekend. Kind of felt like a bachelor again. Here are some picture of the three ladies.

p.s. congratulations Nikki... you finally made it to the blog!

Am I a good husband or what?...

I scored some major points two days ago when I surprised Carolyn with an early birthday / almost sweetest day flower bouquet. I bought her 2 dozen roses... one dozen red for love, and one dozen white for friendship. I'm hoping this will keep me out of trouble for at least 4-6 weeks.

Kristin and Ben

What an amazing couple!

Kristin and Ben got married this weekend up in Crystal Lake and I was the lucky one to photograph everything. I've spent the past couple nights working on the photographs and I've just finished the slideshow. I have to so much more to say about the wedding, but I wanted to get the slideshow up since I know people keep on coming back to my blog to see if it's posted yet. So here it is...

Sorry Carolyn... the Real Love in my Life are Clifbars

I love clifbars! I use to have then all the time when I would train for adventure races. And when I have them now, for some strange reason I feel like I'm taken back to the days when I was in really good shape (I'm not in great shape right now). I also like the packaging they come in. So why the rant about Clifbar's? Well... I went to Dominicks today after I got home and noticed that they were on sale today. Soo... you guessed it, I had to buy a bunch of them.

Google launches streetview in Chicago

Google continues to impress me with the products they come out with. Today they released the streetview feature in Chicago. Streetview essentially stitches together thousands of pictures together to create a virtual experience when you use google maps. I typed in my home address and I was really impressed with the quality and 360 view it had. this would be so helpful if you are looking for a home, or if you want to look at what a home or business looks like before you get there.

play around with this new feature... it's pretty fun to go around town and look around.

Here's a link to google maps. Just click on the streetview tab next to traffic tab.

The Chicago Marathon

This weekend was the Chicago Marathon and it was the HOTTEST marathon in the history of the race. They actually closed the Marathon half way through because the conditions were just too hot. It was even hot just watching the race, so I can't imagine what it was like to run today. I've done 2 Chicago marathons and I kind of got the itch today to do another one. Maybe I'll think about running it in 2008. For those of you who haven't run a marathon and are thinking about it, I highly recommend it. It's a great sense of accomplishment. If you think you can't run one, you're probably wrong. I hadn't run more than 3 miles in my life before I decided to run a marathon, so I'm living proof it can be done. Here are some of the pictures I took today of the race

Congratulations to everyone who ran in today's race!

Kristin and Ben

Here are some shots I took of Ben and Kristin on Saturday. They're getting married next weekend up in Crystal Lake and it should be a blast. I'm going up on Friday afternoon for the rehearsal dinner.

I've got a bunch of other pictures to post tonight from other events... so stay tuned for more...

A very special note to my friend Bob Glynn (and any other Notre Dame fans), but especially Bob

This weekend marked a historic event in college football history. Purdue (5-0) beat Notre Dame (0-5) to give them their worst opening record in the history of the school. Poor little Notre Dame… they’re probably not sure what if feels like to be 0-5. What should they do? How can you come back from a start like this? There’s simply no logical answer. Kind of funny the more you think about it. Now we all know that in the years to come, Notre Dame will come back with a decent, if not very strong football progam… history tells us that. In fact, they’ll probably beat Purdue numerous times over the next 10 years. And I’ll be the first to acknowledge that Purdue’s schedule strength this year has been shabby. Sure it’s easy to be 5-0 when you don’t face a nationally ranked opponent. But that’s not important. What is important is that on a beautiful September afternoon in 2007, Purdue beat up on Notre Dame to give them their 5th straight loss of the season… Notre Dame’s worst start in the 100+ year history of the football program. And man that feels good! And now would seem like a good time the sing the Purdue fight song…

To Your Call Once More We Rally;
Alma Mater Hear Our Praise;
Where The Wabash Spreads Its Valley;
Filled With Joy Our Voices Raise.
Form The Skies In Swelling Echoes
Come The Cheers That Tell The Tale
Of Your Vict'ries And Your Heroes,

Hail Purdue! We Sing All Hail!
Hail, Hail To Old Purdue!
All Hail To Our Old Gold And Black!
Hail, Hail To Old Purdue!
Our Friendship May She Never Lack.
Ever Grateful, Ever True,
Thus We Raise Our Song Anew
Of The Days We've Spent With You,
All Hail Our Own Purdue!

Go Boilers!
